I am not a huge Taylor Swift fan, but my recent twitter feed sparked an interest in her recent album. Folklore was said to have three songs that told the story of a love triangle from all three points of view. Swift never mentioned which three songs, but Twitter speculation and some light lyric research lead me to believe that “cardigan”, “Betty”, and “august” are the big three. From what I gather, the love triangle is between two girls, one named Betty, and another unnamed girl. The boy in the triangle is named James. James and Betty were high school sweet hearts, but during the summer, James had an affair with the unnamed girl. Betty’s point of view is told in “cardigan”. James’ story is told through “Betty”. The unnamed girl’s perspective is told in “august”. From the lyrics of each song, it isn’t hard to draw comparisons between the songs.
Cardigan
Betty
August
I was walking home on broken cobblestones
When you are young, they assume you know nothing
I’m only seventeen, I don’t know anything
And you’d be standin’ in my front porch light
And I knew you’d come back to me
Will you kiss me on the porch
In front of all your stupid friends?
And when I felt like I was an old cardigan
To kiss in cars and downtown bars
She said “James, get in, let’s drive”
Remember when I pulled up and said, “Get in the car”
I dreamt of you all summer long
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets
August sipped away like a bottle of wine
‘Cause you were never mine
